John 19:14

In most translations, John 19:14 reads: “(Now it was the preparation of the Passover, and about the sixth hour.) And he said to the Jews, ‘Behold your King!’ ” Here, Jesus is plainly standing in the presence of Pilate, yet to be crucified.
Because there are different reckonings of time in the New Testament, the meaning of “sixth hour” in this passage is unclear. Is this Roman time, which begins the day at midnight (as we do today)? Or is this Calculated Hebrew Calendar (CHC) time, which reckons the beginning of a day at sunset (Lev. 23:32). The CHC also reckons 12 hours for the night and 12 hours for the day.
The problem is this: If the “sixth hour” is Roman time, then it is 6 AM in the morning, and Jesus was not yet crucified. If the “sixth hour” is CHC time, then it would mean 12 noon, and Jesus would have already been nailed to the cross. Consequently, the “sixth hour” of John 19:14 must mean something else and must harmonize with the clear statement by Mark, which reads: “Now it was about the third hour [CHC, 9 AM] when they crucified Him” (Mark 15:25). Again, the “sixth hour” in John 19:14 shows that Jesus was still alive in the presence of Pilate, ready to be led away to be crucified.
Matthew, Mark, and Luke also referenced the “sixth hour.” They all wrote, “From the sixth hour until the ninth hour [CHC, noon to 3 PM] darkness came over all the land” (Matt. 27:45; Mark 15:33; Luke 23:44). Jesus died at the ninth hour (Matt. 27:46-50; Mark 15:34-38).
The key phrase in John 19:14 is: “the preparation of the Passover.” John also uses this phrase in John 19:31, “It was a preparation day” and in 19:42, “Because of the preparation of the Jews, they laid Jesus there, for the tomb was near.” Thus, the phrase “about the sixth hour” can only mean six hours before the Jewish preparation of their Passover at the Temple, which was to start at the “ninth hour” or 3 PM Roman time, or the “ninth hour” CHC time. The “sixth hour” phrase should be reckoned this way: the “sixth hour” before the “ninth hour” is actually the “third hour”—and thus agrees with the “third hour” of Mark 15:25.
So the “sixth hour” of John 19:14 was actually 9 AM, the “third hour” CHC.
Therefore, the correct translation of John 19:14 should read: “Now it was about the sixth hour before the preparation of the Jewish Temple Passover.”
