The traditional translation of the Greek word λυπ∈ω as “grieve” assumes one is “causing grief” to a third person of a trinity. The Holy Spirit of God is not a person, but the spiritual power God gives to converted believers. This begettal of Holy Spirit from the Father seals them. The power of the Holy Spirit is to lead and empower them to grow in godly character. When Christians sin, their actions are at “cross purposes” to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, it has been translated “vex” instead of “grieve” (Analytical Greek Lexicon-Associated Publishers & Authors, Inc.).
